Rexroat Prairie
Welcome
to Our Site

Rexroat Prairie Nature Preserve in Virginia, Illinois, is a unique destination where history and ecology meet.
Managed by the nonprofit Friends of the Rexroat Prairie, our site features three historic log cabins and a restored tallgrass prairie habitat, offering an immersive experience of Illinois’ natural and pioneer heritage.
Founded in 1977, Rexroat Prairie was established to protect and showcase native prairie plants that were rapidly disappearing from the Midwest landscape. The preserve is named after Rolo Rexroat, a self-taught botanist and Virginia native who donated over 11,000 native plant specimens to the state of Illinois before his passing in 1979.
Today, we continue his legacy by:
-
Preserving endangered prairie ecosystems
-
Maintaining historic log cabins from the 1800s
-
Hosting educational events like Log Cabin Days and Storytime at the Cabins
-
Welcoming visitors to explore, learn, and connect with nature
Whether you're a history buff, nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Rexroat Prairie invites you to experience the beauty and resilience of Illinois’ past and present.
